Abstract:
The making of patterns from experience is a fundamental cognitive operation that unites a broad range of human activity from perception and the definition of the self to disciplinary frameworks and philosophical dispositions. This perspective is applied to design activity and suggests that "problems" are often intimately bound up with, and may be a product of, the conceptual frameworks within which they are regarded. Coming to understand the relationship of the framework to the "problem" is fundamental to design activity, bringing to light that which is no longer questioned and then choosing to reorganize one"s understanding may open the way to new realizations and solutions.
